Sevastopol, October 16 (PolitNavigator, Svetlana Ivanova) - The Diocesan Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church for canonization began work to canonize the Russian naval commander of the Crimean War, Admiral Pavel Nakhimov.

According to him, experts are studying archival materials telling about the personal life and actions of Admiral Nakhimov; for the same purpose, a delegation of dean of the Smolensk diocese arrived in Sevastopol.

“We want to obtain as many documents as possible that shed light on the personality of Nakhimov, who led the defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. The process of canonizing the admiral has begun in the Smolensk diocese,” Isidore said.

Also, according to him, a comprehensive study of the personality of the naval commander as a historical figure, as well as a person, with all his inherent shortcomings, is required.

“We will come to Sevastopol more than once to meet with the clergy, historians, archivists, to collect as much information as possible about Nakhimov. At first glance, there are no obstacles to the admiral’s canonization,” the hierarch added.

Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov was born in 1802 in the Smolensk province. During the Sevastopol defense of 185-1855, he led the defense of the city. He died in June 1855 on Malakhov Kurgan.

The monument to Nakhimov on the main square, which bears his name, is one of the symbols of Sevastopol.

In 2001, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized naval commander Fyodor Ushakov among the righteous, locally revered saints of the Saransk diocese.

The leaders of the Russian and Ukrainian navies, fleet commanders, government officials, a delegation from Greece and about 6 thousand pilgrims came to the Sanaksar monastery in Mordovia for the celebrations associated with the canonization of the admiral.
