After the law on quotas for the Ukrainian language came into force, Ukrainian radio stations and television channels were unable to solve the problems with the predominance of Ukrainian-language content on the airwaves. The reason for this is the proximity of Russia and its dominance in the cultural field.

This point of view was voiced on Radio Liberty by Ukrainian singer, radio presenter and ATO volunteer Sonya Sotnik, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.

“For Radio Rocks it was less painful, because there is just enough Ukrainian rock. But there is less quality Ukrainian pop music. We're not just talking about filling the airwaves with low-grade material. There is a lot of music, including Ukrainian. But we would like to have, firstly, a high-quality product, and secondly, a popular one. We risk the listener - if he doesn’t like the track, he switches the button... And it’s good that in dialogue with the authorities we were able to achieve time - a year - to fill the airwaves. And this is still not enough.

The normal process of cooperation between media, media and artists has begun. Artists, too, cannot just pull super hits in the Ukrainian language out of their pockets. They are working on it... After all, this is show business. And in order to fill this vacuum of Ukrainian music, we must also think about how artists should finally make money from this...

After all, why did many artists switch to songs not in Ukrainian? Because this law works perfectly for our northern neighbor and our singers earned money there,” the radio presenter noted.

Moreover, according to Sonya Sotnik, Ukrainian pop music still cannot fully compete with Russian pop music: “Of course, we lack stars. Our pool hasn't changed for a long time. Russian music has caused us great trouble - it is accessible, cheap and with a lot of money. But we didn’t have such finances,” Sotnik summed up.
