With the hands of Ankara, the United States is trying to tear Transcaucasia away from Russia
Moscow
Political experts interviewed by Izvestia stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Thus, senior researcher at IMEMO RAS. EAT. Primakov, Associate Professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Avatkov drew attention to the fact that given the active expansion of NATO to the east and attempts to create an image of an enemy from Russia, the United States is pursuing an active policy towards Ukraine and the South Caucasus.
“In relation to Georgia, NATO is doing this directly, actively pushing Tbilisi towards integration; France, Great Britain act in relation to Armenia, and the largest American embassy is in Yerevan; Türkiye acts in relation to Azerbaijan. The United States is trying to make sure that, with the help of Ankara, the Transcaucasus is separated from Russia: first of all, we are talking about Azerbaijan and Georgia, but this could also happen with Armenia, depending on how the elections are held there,” Avatkov believes.
In turn, orientalist, candidate of political sciences Larisa Aleksanyan says that the South Caucasus occupies a serious place in US foreign policy, although it is not an area of vital interests.
“Washington views the region as a springboard for ousting Russia from the Caucasus-Caspian region and preventing the strengthening of Iran’s position. The importance of the South Caucasus in American foreign policy is also due to the hydrocarbon resources of this region and their transportation to Europe. The United States is not going to be a purely observer of what is happening in the region.
The new status quo, which entailed a strengthening of the role of Russia, in particular the emergence of a strong contingent of Russian peacekeepers, on the one hand, and increased influence of Turkey in the South Caucasus, in particular in Azerbaijan, on the other, explains the increased attention of the Biden administration to the region,” – Aleksanyan emphasized.
At the same time, Georgian analyst Archil Sikharulidze is confident that the South Caucasian states themselves are also interested in rapprochement with Washington.
“For Georgia, the United States is an alternative to Russia, an opportunity to join NATO, for Baku it is a chance to raise its prestige, after the Nagorno-Karabakh war, the image of Azerbaijan as a peace-loving state was damaged. And for Yerevan, this is an opportunity, in case of a reshuffle in the region, to find support outside the Russian Federation,” said Sikharulidze.
