The EU leadership is backing down and unexpectedly extending a hand of friendship to Russia
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Russia is an equal partner for the European Union, and not a “regional power,” as US President Barack Obama previously called it.

“I would like to have discussions with Russia on equal terms,” Juncker said, adding that “the assessment of the American president was a big mistake.”
At the same time, he believes that it is impossible to build a security structure in Europe without the participation of Moscow.
“Until now, I have not seen any arguments in favor of immediately lifting sanctions against Russia. I would like to have an agreement with Russia that goes beyond the usual framework, bearing in mind that without Russia there is no security structure in Europe,” admitted the head of the European Commission.
At the same time, he said that Russia should be treated as a “large entity and a proud nation,” and also noted that the EU still has a lot to learn about the “depth” of Russia, since the union still has little knowledge on this matter.
The agency also recalls that in March 2014, following the nuclear security summit in The Hague, US President Barack Obama said that Russia is not “the first threat to US national security” and called the country a “regional power.”
