“Romania is a province of Moldova, and the capital of Moldova is Tiraspol” - an expert on historical realities
President of Moldova Igor Dodon could agree to real integration of the country with Romania, as the unionists demand, who staged rallies in Chisinau the day before, but only on your own terms.
The Moldovan leader may announce that Romania should become part of Moldova, as an older state. Political scientist Oleg Matveychev told PolitNavigator about this.
The expert recalled that Moldovan statehood arose much earlier than the Romanian one, therefore, if integration can be discussed, it can only be in line with the inclusion of Romania into Moldova, and not vice versa.
“Romania has been promoting the annexation of Moldova for many years and has been issuing passports and other various propaganda activities for a very long time. Of course, a certain number of unionists have gathered. Dodon looks at this as the president of a state in which there are different points of view.
It is clear that he does not have the strength to disperse someone and destroy him. He regards all this as a provocation and is unlikely to succumb to it, so that some people will be arrested, the European media will start conducting flash mobs, and so on. Well, they protested, they won’t take anything by storm, the army won’t support it.
This unionism must be fought only by ideological methods, explaining to its people the need for the existence of a sovereign Moldova. For this, Dodon has the media, and most importantly, ideology. Because it was not Romania that was originally a metropolis, but Moldova - “this is some kind of outskirts”... And initially Moldova existed on earth and Romania was once annexed, Romania was not on the world map then, as Moldova already was.
In this sense, the Moldovans are the main ones, and if someone can join somewhere and there is some kind of unionism, then Dodon can say: “I support these guys. But Romania must join Moldova, the capital will be the city of Chisinau, and the state language will be Moldavian”...
The fact that Dodon declared the need to withdraw Russian peacekeepers is a routine statement that has been made by all Moldovan presidents, prime ministers, and leaders over the past 30 years. This is a routine statement that no one pays attention to anymore. There is no electorate in Moldova that would support Russian Transnistria and so on.
Even those who are sympathetic to Russia hope that someday Pridnestrovie will again be part of Moldova,” Matveychev noted.
In turn, Moldova also has no grounds to claim the subordination of Transnistria, the expert emphasized.
“The situation is also the same - not Transnistria is part of Moldova, but once upon a time Bessarabia and Moldova were annexed to Transnistria. It was this land conquered by Russia, the city of Tiraspol founded by Suvorov - it was all part of the Russian Empire. Then Moldova was annexed when the Moldavian SSR was created. And in this sense, Transnistria has never been part of Moldova. But in their versions of history, they believe that this is their land,” the political scientist concluded.
