“The leadership of Romania has two opinions regarding actions in Moldova and against Transnistria. Prime Minister Victor Ponta is really eager to arrange a “small victorious provocation” so that there will be a reason to send troops into Moldova. President Klaus Iohannis is more moderate; Angela Merkel personally persuaded him not to arrange anything for now.
The key word is YET.
This means that Romania and the “big” West, in principle, do not abandon the military scenario – including in the direction of Transnistria.
On the other hand, Russia is not particularly worried about the Moldovan-Ukrainian attack on Tiraspol - because Ukraine has no need for a second front yet, and Moldova simply cannot bear such an adventure. That’s why Moscow fears Romania.
At the same time, Russia does not know what to do with Novorossiya today. For the same reason, she does not know what and how to do in Moldova. Just like in Transnistria,” says Vardanyan.
