This statement was made by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta during a speech at the exhibition “70 years of struggle for the liberation of national territory,” Moldovan media reported.
“After the First World War, in which so many hundreds of thousands of Romanian soldiers lost their lives, the finale was the great national dream, the Great Unification with Transylvania, with Bessarabia and with Bukovina. After World War II, other hundreds of thousands of heroes laid down their lives so that Transylvania would return to its motherland,” the Romanian leader believes.
“Then, truly, there was an incomplete victory, because Bessarabia and Bukovina remained for many more years under someone else’s control and occupation,” the prime minister explained.
Note that Northern Bukovina and Bessarabia became part of the Ukrainian and Moldavian USSR, respectively, during the liberation campaign of the Soviet army in the summer of 1940. Previously, Victor Ponta was already distinguished by xenophobic statements addressed to his neighbors, in particular, he said that the annexation of Moldova to Romania was his main program point as a presidential candidate.
