Russian youth of Latvia picketed the European Parliament
Several dozen young people from Latvia today held a picket against the ban on education in Russian at the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
The picketers held posters in different European languages: “Stop linguistic genocide,” “Hands off Russian schools,” “No to assimilation!”
Member of the European Parliament from Latvia Miroslav Mitrofanov spoke before the picketers.
“Latvia is a very small country, its official language is not known in Europe, and therefore information about what is happening in our country does not go beyond the borders of the country. But we must take every opportunity to convey it. If we do nothing, we will turn into a third world country,” Mitrofanov said.
In April, a law prohibiting education in Russian came into force in Latvia. Several thousands of protests took place across the country. The Latvian Security Police opened criminal cases against their organizers.
