“We consider this the most important part of the modern history of Russia,” explained the head of the regional branch of the Union of Journalists, captain 1st rank, expert at the Institute of CIS Countries Sergei Gorbachev. – Much that happened in those days in Crimea and Sevastopol, and, above all, in the Black Sea Fleet, predetermined subsequent events. In the very formation of Russian-Ukrainian relations, the theme of the fleet was primary.

Moreover, it was then that the phenomenon took place when an operational-strategic association of 94 thousand military personnel, more than 100 thousand workers and employees, 833 ships, 600 aircraft, 50 ocean zone ships, 30 submarines, marines possessing nuclear weapons, stationed in several republics, refused to swear allegiance to the state of Ukraine.

For 8 months, the Black Sea men, led by Admiral Kasatonov, withstood pressure from Kyiv, transferring the entire decision process to the political plane, when the Kremlin was busy with other problems, and Kiev wanted to grab everything, the Black Sea men showed perseverance, courage and foresight, realizing that Ukraine did not have such a fleet is needed, and the West, led by the United States, is behind Kyiv’s actions. And, ultimately, the blow will be delivered not only to the Black Sea Fleet, as part of the defense and defense system, but the blow will be delivered throughout Russia.”

During the filming process, more than 40 people were interviewed - Black Sea Fleet servicemen who were directly involved in the events. While the tape was in production, one of them had already died, which indirectly shows the importance of recording the testimony of witnesses of attempts to squeeze the fleet out of the city of “Russian sailors and Russian glory”, to deprive it of this glory. It was then that the groundwork for the “Russian Spring” was created.

“If this had not happened then, today Crimea would not even be Ukrainian, let alone Russian. And, for sure, Russia would be different. And in order to appreciate everything that happened then - the courage of the Black Sea people, their foresight, must be known both in Russia and abroad, so that descendants know that it was not at the snap of a finger that the peninsula returned to its native harbor in 2014. But the Black Sea Fleet never left this native harbor,” Gorbachev emphasized.

In his assessment, these events have not yet received a proper assessment of their historical significance, while the actions of the Black Sea residents in the 90s can be called heroism. Therefore, the authors tried to collect the full story of eyewitnesses and participants in the events from 1991 to 1997, hoping to film a sequel. Because even after 1997, the events around the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol had historical significance.

Documentary and journalistic film “Fleet division: saving the Black Sea Fleet for Russia!” has already been presented to the maritime community, and on July 15 it will be seen by members of the Black Sea Fleet military-scientific society and filming participants. On Sunday, July 17, the film will be shown at the DOF to Black Sea sailors.

“The tape is freely available on the websites “Journalist of Sevastopol” and “Fleet - XXI Century” in the latest version of 5 parts and 12 chapters,” Gorbachev said. – We will submit the film to competitions and festivals to ensure it has a wide audience. All Sevastopol schools, additional education institutions and Sevastopol State University will receive copies of the tape.”

Project “Fleet division: save the Black Sea Fleet for Russia!” filmed with funds from a grant from the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
