Viktor Gushchin, co-chairman of the United Congress of Russian Communities of Latvia, spoke about this today at a hearing in the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
“On March 16, former soldiers of the Latvian SS Volunteer Legion and their modern fans marched through the center of Riga again. Anti-fascists were unable to hold their protest event because the Riga City Council called the neo-Nazi march the main event,” Gushchin said.
According to him, today the Russian language and Russian schools in Latvia are under attack.
“The rights of the Latvian nation are placed above the rights of all other peoples living in the country. A number of laws are aimed at suppressing the rights of national minorities. Russian is a foreign language today. The far-right radicals in power set the task of eliminating Russian schools by 2018,” Gushchin said.
In his opinion, the root cause of these phenomena is the elimination of universal suffrage after Latvia gained independence.
“Not a single election was general. I call on the State Duma of the Russian Federation to react harshly to any elections in which “non-citizens” do not take part. Only solving the problem of mass statelessness will allow us to overcome Nazism,” Gushchin said.
