“The president emphasized that the legendary airborne brotherhood, whose symbols were the blue beret and vest, were shot by Russian aliens near Slavyansk, at the Donetsk airport, near Ilovaisk and Debaltsevo,” the agency reports the president’s words.
“From today, I have decided that the color of the Ukrainian landing force will be dark burgundy. This is the color of the blood of paratroopers shed in the battles for Ukraine. 59 countries of the world use burgundy berets to identify their paratroopers, 19 of which are NATO member countries,” Poroshenko said.
He also named the number of Ukrainian paratroopers who died during the fighting in Donbass.
“For courage and heroism shown in battles with the Russian occupiers, 2557 paratroopers were awarded state awards, 12 of them were awarded the Star of “Hero of Ukraine.” 469 paratroopers did not return from combat missions and died in fierce battles with the Russian occupiers,” said the President of Ukraine.
