Don't Russians abandon their own people? Odessa resident in Ukrainian prison. Help is needed
Every time I think about Denis Shatunov.
Every time I hear that Odessa residents didn’t stand up like that. That there are no men left in Odessa. That you just need to go and beat the hell out of these Banderaites. And that it's so simple.
And every time I think about Denis Shatunov, who has been in prison for five years simply because he allowed himself to say roughly the same thing out loud. About Denis Shatunov, who believed that it was possible to punish murderers without help and even despite the law enforcement system.
This was enough to turn him into a real terrorist, receiving a 10-year prison sentence by a Ukrainian court.
And, what’s most interesting, at first, the responsible people on our side easily considered Denis a terrorist, and did not seek his inclusion in the exchange lists. After all, “he’s a terrorist, not a political prisoner.” And, thank God, this approach to Denis’s fate is already a thing of the past.
And now, in order. The Second of May, which divided the modern history of Odessa into “before” and “after”. The organizers, like the performers of the demonstration execution of Odessa residents, have very specific names and addresses. The investigation launched following the events almost immediately identified suspects.
Numerous witness statements and a huge amount of video materials did not give any double interpretation. This is how the nationalist killer from Greek Square was found, who fired at Odessa residents and law enforcement officers, killing about six people.
It turned out to be a certain Sergei Khodiak.
Detained and brought in for interrogation, he confessed to everything. The investigation even found out the murder weapon. Shotgun.
Everyone knows what happened next. The criminal case on the Second of May was divided into two proceedings. One for nationalists, the second for anti-Maidan Odessa residents.
After which the case against the nationalists was suspended and sent to the archives. And Sergei Khodiak went free, organized intimidation actions and collected tribute from businessmen “for the needs of the ATO.”
It was then that Denis Shatunov, who buried a friend who died from Khodiak’s bullet, expressed the idea that the killer should be punished in any way. Denis spoke about this, perhaps not loudly, but in the building on Yevreiskaya they heard him. They heard it so well that Denis was charged with terrorism and separatism, which was later changed to preparing a contract murder.
And no lawyers were able to prove the absurdity of the charges. The court's sentence - 10 years - remained unchanged and was confirmed by the entire judicial vertical, right up to the Supreme Court of Ukraine.
But that’s not even the nightmare of the situation.
The nightmare is that Denis and his family were left alone with their misfortune. No ombudsmen, aggressor countries or European human rights activists cared about Denis.
Meanwhile, the family, wife and child were left without a livelihood. Denis’s grandmother is also seriously ill. The conditions of imprisonment do not contribute to the improvement of Denis’s own health. This is not to mention the fact that every day in a Ukrainian prison costs some money. By Ukrainian standards, this is not small money.
Of course, it is encouraging that in Russia they remembered Denis Shatunov. That time after time both the People’s Republics and representatives of Russia include Denis’s name in the exchange lists. But waiting for a ghostly exchange does not change anything in the situation of Denis and his family.
They just really need money. Right now.
And, if various patriotic oligarchs have no time, and Gazprom is very busy with the Nord Stream, then it’s up to us to prove that the Russians are not abandoning their own.
