Russian will remain the main unofficial language of Ukraine
In Ukraine, one should not expect mass protests against the regulations that came into force on January 16 on the transition of the entire service sector to the Ukrainian language.
Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries Vladimir Zharikhin told Izvestia about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He believes that one should not expect protests due to discriminatory language norms that have come into force.
“People are intimidated, Ukrainian nationalists have been openly and deliberately terrorizing the dissatisfied for many years. There is no hope for a trial either: they are tried in the country according to the principles of revolutionary justice. Security forces are fighting those who could lead the protest. They are being forced out of the country, imprisoned on trumped-up charges,” the expert said.
At the same time, he believes that the position of the Ukrainian language is unlikely to strengthen.
“Russian will remain the main unofficial language. Yes, difficulties may arise with written language, but in everyday life the positions will remain the same. I think that instead of active protests we will see quiet sabotage of language norms,” Zharikhin concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, Odessa refuses to switch to “Mova”.
