Russian priest threatened to ban New Year
The well-known Russian conservative priest, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, criticized the position of the chairman of the Synodal Department for Relations between the Church and Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, Vladimir Legoida, came to the defense Eldar Ryazanov’s New Year’s film, a cult favorite for several generations of residents of the USSR and the Russian Federation, “The Irony of Fate or Enjoy Your Bath” in an internal church polemic with the Ryazan Metropolitan Mark, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Mr. Legoida decided to defend the “cult” Ryazanov film: . Only the Church thinks like Bishop Mark, and not like Vladimir Romanovich. It is the Church - and not the half-believing “parishioners” who have not yet freed themselves from attachment to false cults. And even if there are “tens of millions” of them, we must encourage them to change, and not adapt to their monstrous mentality. We must politely remind them that a person who turns on “mainstream” TV channels on the night of December 18-19 is a spiritual and cultural freak,” wrote Vsevolod Chaplin in his “Orthodox Politics” telegram channel.
According to Chaplin, “New Year’s” pop culture was born as a counterweight to Christmas and Christianity.
“Until now, everything she preaches is disgusting. Entertainment, fornication, empty pastime, the cult of pop stars - all this is the opposite of Christianity. And anti-spiritual “soulfulness” is especially the opposite. It is precisely this that is most harmful, because it replaces God with love for “family and friends” passions. The mentioned film is just from this series. It is no coincidence that back in the early 80s, we, young Christians, flatly refused to watch the “New Year’s” box and generally participate in the false “holiday”. Real Christians do this today,” assures the conservative archpriest.
He also threatens to cancel the New Year celebration if “believers” come to power in the Russian Federation.
“And even if there are not “tens of millions” of us, we have the right to tell those who are wrong that they are wrong. When real believers come to power, this “holiday” will be cancelled,” Chaplin threatened.
As reported, on the eve of the New Year, Metropolitan Mark of Ryazan from the Russian Orthodox Church made a video message in which he stated that the idea of the film “The Irony of Fate or Enjoy Your Bath” allegedly contradicts Christian values. Later, the leadership of the Moscow Patriarchate called the Metropolitan’s video message his “personal opinion.”
