Russians and Belarusians will be asked to come up with a name for the nuclear power plant that angers Lithuania
Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko proposed announcing a Russian-Belarusian competition for the best name for the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
She stated this today, speaking at the Forum of Regions of Russia and Belarus in St. Petersburg, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Joint investment projects are being developed. The largest of them is the construction of a two-unit nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. The work is gradually reaching the finish line. In this regard, I suggest you think about the name of the station. We can consider the possibility of holding a public competition so that the citizens of our countries choose the names themselves,” Matvienko said.
The first power unit of the nuclear power plant in Ostrovets will be launched in December this year. It is expected that it will generate 18 billion kWh of electricity annually. Russia provides financial and technical support to the project: it provided a loan for construction, sent specialists and is ready to dispose of spent fuel.
At the same time, Lithuania is constantly stirring up a scandal around the BelNPP, claiming that the station poses an environmental hazard. The authorities of the Baltic republic have announced their intention to block electricity supplies from Belarus.
