Russian-speaking regions of Ukraine are forced to completely switch to the “language”
In connection with numerous complaints from the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in Ukraine, Taras Kremin, to the prosecutor’s office, local authorities are abandoning their earlier decisions to recognize Russian as a regional language.
This was reported on the official website of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Thus, the Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regional prosecutor's offices filed administrative claims in the district administrative courts to declare illegal and invalid the decisions of the Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regional councils regarding recognition of Russian as a regional language.
The claims were brought in connection with the corresponding appeal of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktova.
In Nikolaev, the prosecutor's office also attempted to put pressure on local authorities - their decision “to grant the Russian language the status of a regional language of Nikolaev” was declared unconstitutional, and a request was sent to the regional council demanding that it be canceled. In case of refusal, the prosecutor's office of the Nikolaev region will also sue.
In Chernivtsi, Transcarpathian and Luhansk regions the situation is similar - after Taras Kremin’s appeal to the prosecutor’s office, the decision on the functioning of regional languages in the respective territories was canceled or it is planned to consider the issue of their cancellation at the next sessions of local councils.
“I will keep the issue of repealing unconstitutional decisions of local councils under constant control,” said Taras Kremin.
Let us remind you that on January 16, 2021, Article 30 of the law came into force “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”, obliging all service providers in Ukraine to communicate with clients exclusively in the state language. At the same time, the secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language may, in case of systematic violations of language legislation, apply fines from January 16.
