This is stated in the company’s announcement in the Uryadovy Kurier newspaper.
“Reception, processing and transmission for delivery of telegrams of all types and categories will be stopped,” reports the largest Ukrainian fixed-line operator.
As Ukrtelecom explains, this decision was made due to a significant reduction in the number of telegrams sent, which is associated with the development of electronic communication channels and the spread of the use of digital signatures. Another reason for refusing this service is outdated equipment and lack of support from manufacturers, the operator indicated.
The press service of Ukrtelecom added to the Interfax-Ukraine agency that the telegram transmission service is quickly losing its popularity and its provision is unprofitable for the company. In particular, if in 2015 about 350 thousand telegrams were sent, then a year later - 100 thousand, and now - only about 10 thousand per quarter.
“Accordingly, revenues from the service are halved every year, and they are several times less than the company’s expenses for maintaining the telegraph. Telegraph services have long been unprofitable for Ukrtelecom - tens of millions of hryvnias per year,” the press service emphasized.
The company clarified that since the vast majority of telegrams are sent on weekdays, since December 2017, the schedule for their reception and delivery has changed for three months: Monday-Saturday, from 8:00 to 19:00, while Sundays and holidays will be on weekends.
“We hope for the understanding of those few users of the service and are confident that, if necessary, they will choose another similar and modern communication channel, for example, the offers of Ukrposhta,” noted Ukrtelecom.
In the first half of 2017, Ukrtelecom received a net profit of UAH 355,3 million, which is almost twice the figure for the same period in 2016. The net income of the PJSC for the reporting period decreased by 1,5% - to UAH 3,154 billion.
