Saakashvili took the bait of the Georgian special services - Mamradze
Fugitive ex-president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, arrested after illegal return to the country, intended to gather a hundred thousand people in Tbilisi.
The former head of the State Chancellery of Georgia, Pyotr Mamradze, spoke about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, as quoted by Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He said what Saakashvili intended to do.
“The plan in his fevered brain was this. After the municipal elections, at 8 pm, gather 100 thousand people on Freedom Square in the center of Tbilisi for a protest rally against the “falsification” of the elections. And this is where he would appear. It would be spectacular,” says Mamradze.
According to him, the Georgian authorities knew that Saakashvili was in the country, butofficially denied this information, so as not to frighten off the illegals..
“He was initially targeted by the special services, and they did the right thing by allowing him to reach Tbilisi and choosing the moment for his arrest when he was completely alone in this safe house. Now party leaders say that they knew nothing and were guided in their statements by government statements. Government statements that the ex-president was not in Georgia were made so as not to scare him away. Saakashvili was reassured that his legend that he did not leave Ukraine was working,” added the former Georgian official.
He adds that Saakashvili's supporters are now disappointed.
“They expected that he would arrive at the Tbilisi airport, as promised, that he would be greeted by crowds of fans, that a spectacular arrest would take place under the television cameras of all the world’s media. And he sneaked in like a thief. And it turned out to be an embarrassment. This was not the return of a political leader to Georgia. It was something shameful,” concluded Mamradze.
