Saakashvili gives up his post and goes into the shadow of Georgian politics
Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili decided to leave the post of chairman of the opposition Georgian party “United National Movement” (UNM), as he does not have the opportunity to exercise party leadership on the spot, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He announced this on his page on the social network.
“The party needs constant renewal, so now we need new people and the construction of new principles for managing the party. Firstly, Ivanishvili (Bidzina Ivanishvili - chairwoman of the ruling Georgian Dream party - Ed.) is doing everything to not let me into the country. Secondly, some of our leaders are in prison. All this complicates the work of our organization. Therefore, in this situation, it is necessary to elect a new chairman of the United National Movement party,” Saakashvili said on social networks.
“I think Grigol Vashadze ran a very good presidential campaign and I personally would support him as chairman of our party,” Saakashvili said.
According to him, the UNM is currently supported by 400 thousand registered active supporters who must take part in the election of the party chairman.
