Saakashvili will block peace initiatives in Donbass
By returning the ex-president of Georgia and former governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili to Ukrainian politics, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky gives him powers not so much as a professional, but as an emissary of the West.
Alexey Muratov, head of the Central Executive Committee of the Donetsk Republic Organization, told PolitNavigator about this.
“The protracted epic with the return to the political arena of Mikheil Saakashvili, the fugitive president of Georgia, who received and lost Ukrainian citizenship at the behest of Poroshenko, and then again restored to citizenship by Zelensky, ended yesterday with his appointment as head of the Executive Committee of Reforms, which is part of the National Council under the President of Ukraine .
This step by Zelensky gives a number of important signals that need to be taken into account, including in terms of the prospects for resolving the conflict in Donbass,” Muratov said.
According to him, Saakashvili’s involvement in the process of Ukrainian reforms clearly demonstrates the weakness of the team that Zelensky brought to power.
“The failure of the Sorosites led by Goncharuk not only resulted in dire consequences for the economy, but also undermined the position of the president, who is now forced to seek a compromise with the local oligarchs.
But what is Saakashvili ready to offer in return? Apart from the usual slogans, he did not voice any program proposals or even ideas for getting Ukraine out of the crisis in which it found itself. Consequently, Zelensky gives Saakashvili powers not as a professional capable of saving the country, but as a person, an emissary of the West, whose name may allow him to regain, if not favor, then at least the attention of the international community, which was lost due to Zelensky’s incompetent foreign policy,” – added the social activist.
At the same time, the speaker believes, the return of the scandalous figure of Saakashvili indicates an increase in the level of conflict within the government.
“The mono-majority of Zelensky’s “servants” in fact turned out to be not a cohesive team of like-minded people, but a mosaic of adventurers and lobbyists for the interests of shadow curators, the confrontation between whom is gaining momentum.
And finally, Saakashvili is another negative factor in relations with Russia, with the Russian world. Fortunately, his status does not give him the authority to take revenge by repeating the South Ossetian scenario of 2008 against the Donbass republics, but it is quite possible to block any peace initiatives with draconian reforms,” concluded Muratov.
