Sacred sacrifice? A man self-immolated in the center of Moscow
An unknown man attempted self-immolation today in the center of Moscow near Pushkinskaya Square.
The fire was quickly extinguished by passers-by and police officers. The suicide survived.
As reported by the Main Directorate of the Moscow Ministry of Internal Affairs, his action is in no way connected with today’s protests by supporters of opposition blogger Alexei Navalny. The man despaired after losing his apartment.
However, political scientist Oleg Bondarenko admits that self-immolation could be part of some sinister scenario.
“The appearance of news about the prevention of the attempted self-immolation of an unknown man on Tverskaya is quite significant - if we accept the idea that this is someone’s scenario, then right now, at a time of decline in protest activity, a “sacred sacrifice” is needed.
It will come in especially handy on the eve of February 2 – the day of Navalny’s trial. FBK (foreign agent - ed.) has already announced protests for next week - they are openly escalating. My forecast is that we are at the beginning of the play, all the most interesting things are ahead,” Bondarenko wrote on his Facebook.
