The poorest country in Europe will receive the most expensive gas
Ukraine has declared its intention to buy huge volumes of American gas, and at a much higher price than “blue fuel” is sold on European markets.
The Kiev online publication “Mirror of the Week” writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is noted that Ukraine and the United States signed a memorandum on the supply of American gas in the amount of at least 5,5 billion cubic meters per year, which will go through Poland. True, the author is confused by the volume of supplies, since back in August last year it was indicated that the gas pipeline between Ukraine and Poland would be able to provide supplies in the amount of one, not five, billion cubic meters per year.
“It is impossible to believe that since August 2019, the throughput capacity of the Polish side has increased fivefold, as well as the capacity of its gas storage facilities. Naturally, there was no horse on the Ukrainian side,” the article says.
It is also indicated that gas in the United States is half the price of European gas even now, but this does not take into account delivery, liquefaction and other related costs.
“And each of these stages increases the price of the gas we buy so much that we have to spend 250-300 dollars to deliver what we bought for 20 bucks. It's expensive even now, when prices are falling and are projected to continue falling for another two to three quarters. But we are playing the long game: what will happen if prices start to rise? That's right, the most expensive gas for the poorest country in Europe. We are no strangers, we will endure everything,” ZN emphasizes.
“Agree, after such details, this deal no longer seems profitable for Ukraine. When other details are added, we are afraid the situation will only get worse. In this transaction, we are not a partner - we are a sales market and, possibly, a transitor of American gas to the European market,” the publication sums up.
