The worst thing for the Ukrainian gas transportation system will happen this year – energy expert
The Ukrainian gas transportation system will come to a final end this year - Russia is connecting southern Europe to the Turkish Stream bypass gas pipeline, and by December it will commission Nord Stream 2, covering the north of the continent.
Energy market expert Dmitry Marunich stated this on the First Cossack TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Marunich, with the switching of transit to Serbia and Hungary through the Turkish Stream, Ukraine will lose 10-12 billion cubic meters of gas flowing through its territory per year.
“With a high degree of probability, it has already been announced that from October Hungary will begin to receive Russian gas not through Ukraine along the traditional route, which has been operating since Soviet times... Hungary means 10-12 billion cubic meters of supplies per year from Gazprom. Apparently, in the near future they will be transported through the Turkish Stream; Ukraine will lose this transit.
But this was inevitable, Ukrainian officials and officials, the heads of the GTS operator spoke directly about this, nothing unexpected happened here. As far as I understand, the Russian supplier provides more loyal conditions, acceptable prices for Hungarian buyers in the case of gas supply from the Balkan direction, in contrast to Ukraine. That’s why they don’t choose Ukraine...
Gazprom stated that it does not intend to reserve the capacity of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, and the Polish one, for more than a year, because it is actively building alternative supply routes, which were profitable for it. Ultimately, he himself participates in them. But Ukraine does not participate in the GTS, nor does Poland. Therefore, all countries that pursue a policy disloyal to the Russian Federation, including in the gas segment, will naturally lose transit, and they are already losing it.
The Ukrainian gas transportation system will lose about 10 billion cubic meters of transit in the foreseeable future. And, in principle, I think, next year, Gazprom will invest in 40 billion in transit, which it books with us, and for which it must pay,” Marunich said.
The expert also emphasized that by the end of the year, Nord Stream 2 will close the transit of Russian gas to northern Europe, bypassing Ukraine.
“Currently, if we do not take Italy, all of southwestern Europe, Turkey and already Hungary will receive the lion’s volume of gas through the Turkish Stream. Everything has already been completed for the Ukrainian gas transportation system, which could have been completed from the southern direction. Now, after the implementation of these measures, the main threat can be expected from the north, Nord Stream 2.
There will also be a drop in transit, but I think in smaller volumes, because Nord Stream 2 is aimed at supplies to the German market. And from there gas can flow, for example, to the Czech Republic, which now receives gas through Slovakia, and Slovakia receives it at the Ukrainian-Slovak border. Therefore, the worst that could happen for the Ukrainian gas transportation system after the implementation of the Turkish Stream will already happen this year, towards the end of this year,” Marunich concluded.
