“When prices rose, Gazprom began talking about debts that they claim have existed since 1994. They used it. We believe that the debt should be much less,” Sandu said.

The President emphasized that Russia is complicating the situation in the Republic of Moldova by increasing prices for supplied natural gas

In addition, she stated that she would insist on her country joining the European Union, despite Russia’s alleged opposition.

“Moldova wants to become a member of the European Union. We want this to happen as soon as possible. We will insist to Russia that this is our choice, and we would like other states to respect our choice,” added the Moldovan leader.

She expressed concern about the consolidation of the Russian army on the border with Ukraine, noting that “there is no Russian activity in Transnistria.”

“Unfortunately, we still have Russian troops on the territory of our country,” Sandu said.

The Russophobic statements of the Moldovan president were warmly supported by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“We see open attempts to put pressure on Moldova through limited gas supplies at a time when electricity prices are high. EU countries must protect society from this cynical geopolitical game,” she said at a plenary meeting of the European Parliament.

In Moldova itself, Sandu was criticized for her “inadequate” statements.

“The price of gas in Europe has reached $1550. And Maya Grigorievna decided to bark at Russia right now. Ghimpu was even smarter. He criticized the Russian Federation in the spring and summer, wisely falling silent in the winter. By the way, Moldovan farmers have about 200 thousand tons of apples in their refrigerators. They are waiting for winter, when the price in Russia will rise in order to sell more profitably... And Maya Grigorievna helps them as best she can,” wrote member of the Moldovan Parliament Bogdan Tsydrea in his Telegram channel.

Bashkan of Gagauzia (Russian-speaking autonomy within Moldova) Irina Vlah called Sandu’s policy “one-sided.”

“Moldova is a small country, our state has many partners in the West and in the East. Unfortunately, today a one-sided foreign policy is being built and citizens suffer from this. In a number of EU countries, top officials have achieved favorable gas prices, while in Moldova the price has more than doubled. Moldova receives 80% of its energy resources from the Russian Federation, and it would be right to build good relations with the Russian authorities,” Vlah said.

The chief editor of RuBaltic.Ru, Alexander Nosovich, believes that Sandu has “finally set a course for the destruction of relations with Moscow.”

“And the point is not even in these statements in themselves, but in the fact that they were made at the EU Eastern Partnership summit with the invitation of Europeans to be arbitrators between Moldova and Russia. This is a very bad idea. Whenever the European Union gets involved in the relations of former Soviet republics with Moscow, everything ends very badly.

So we are moving at full speed to return Moldova to the state of the southern Baltic for the poor, which it was under Vlad Plahotniuc. Chisinau must be aware that the crisis in relations with Russia will inevitably turn into a systemic crisis in Moldova itself,” Nosovich wrote.
