“Thank you to the United States for being with us during the gas crisis. We have remained in close contact with our American partners and look forward to working together to improve the resilience of our energy sector. Thank you for your support,” Sandu wrote.

The United States brings up the rear in thanking Sandu. The first to receive thanks from the Moldovan president in a telephone conversation was her Ukrainian colleague Vladimir Zelensky. Then she thanked the ambassadors of European states en masse via Skype. And only Gazprom and Russia did not receive signs of attention.

Moldovan journalist Lyudmila Belchenkova believes that this is elementary PR on the part of the president. She thanks those states in the information field of which she wishes to be present.

“I thanked her on Twitter, in English... Well, so that people in America would definitely notice. Regarding this, I have two questions: how exactly did the United States help us, and for what purpose did she contact them on this issue,” Belchenkova said on one of the TV channels.

Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov was not surprised by Sandu’s gratitude.

“We reached an agreement with Gazprom and are receiving vital gas from Russia, and are showered with gratitude to the United States - and demonstratively. It will continue to be so. Well, this leaves no illusions about the “partners” and their intentions. The conclusion is obvious: our gas supplies in no way tie current Chisinau to Russia. This is exactly what M. Sandu makes clear in every possible way,” Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel.

The series of presidential thanksgivings takes place against the backdrop of desperate attempts by the Moldovan press to prove that the Moldovan government has won the negotiations with Gazprom. Details of the contract emerging in the media and the promise to increase tariffs for the population make this task extremely difficult. Unconventional argumentation was used.

The head of the Ministry of Health of Moldova, Alla Nemerenko, appreciated the “non-verbal language” in the photo of the head of Gazprom Alexey Miller and Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu from negotiations in St. Petersburg.

“When shaking hands, Spynu’s palm is on top, which means he has an advantage; Miller's palm is tightly clenched, fingers tense - this means that he wants to emphasize his strength (although he was not able to show this in the negotiations). Spynu holds the folder close to his body - like a valuable trophy, Miller keeps the folder at a distance. The location of the shooting is chosen by the owners, and the background is also not accidental - a message has been sent - remember - it’s winter, it’s cold. Miller's smile is standard, protocol, almost fake. Spynu’s smile is tired, but sincere,” Nemerenko wrote on her Facebook.

Opposition businessman Vyacheslav Platon smashed the minister’s theory to smithereens.

“I did not immediately speak out about the gas contract until I received reliable information from a source in Gazprom about the behind-the-scenes of the negotiations. Miller showed a master class on how to breed suckers! Of course, this is not his level, but “the boss decided to have some fun.” The negotiations made it clear that Gazprom expects a lower price in the future.

Today there are abnormal short-term prices, and Gazprom needs them solely to stimulate European regulators to launch Nord Stream 2. Therefore, he exchanged very high prices for 2-3 months for moderately high prices for 5 years. Therefore, the contract was extended not for 1 year, as usual, but for 5 years at once. Thus, they reserved all capacities for Gazprom, killed the third energy package and turned the Iasi-Chisinau gas pipeline into a pile of scrap metal for €150 million, beautifully showing Romania what their brotherly friendship is worth to the Moldovans. Masterly game!!!,” wrote Plato in his Telegram channel.
