Sandu is pleased: Biden mentioned Moldova between Sudan and Zambia
US President Joe Biden, speaking at the UN General Assembly, mentioned Moldova.
“The truth is that the democratic world is everywhere. It lives in anti-corruption activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and peaceful protesters. On the front lines of this fight in Belarus, Burma, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela... He lives in the proud Moldovans who won a landslide victory in the fight for democratic rule, for the opportunity to fight corruption, for a more inclusive economy,” Biden said.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who was in the UN hall, quickly and promptly responded to this remark.
“Our achievements are visible in New York. Thank you to Mr. Biden for appreciating the choice made by our citizens who decided to fight for democracy, defeat corruption and develop the economy,” Sandu wrote on her Facebook.
Opposition member of the Moldovan parliament Bogdan Tidrea drew attention to the fact that Sandu’s subscribers did not share her sincere joy.
“Master called me his beloved wife! (With). Oh, how PAS supporters are filled with boiling water: they say, thank you, Domn Biden, for your trust. Look at how President Maia Sandu is ostracizing people in the comments on Facebook - there are very offensive ones, saying that nothing has been done in a year, only prices have risen,” Tsydrya wrote in his Telegram channel.
“Apparently, she was not embarrassed that he mentioned Moldova between Sudan and Zambia. But in Ukraine there is mourning - the owner has never mentioned it in the line of these great powers,” political scientist Vladimir Kornilov sneers.
A day earlier, Sandu made another gesture of loyalty towards the United States. She did not reward the outgoing Chinese ambassador. For comparison, former US Ambassador Derek Hogan received the Order of Honor from Moldova, and former head of the EU mission Peter Michalko received the Medal for Diplomatic Merit.
Sandu's tactlessness was condemned by the former President of Moldova Igor Dodon.
“I regard this step by Maia Sandu as a clear provocation or following clear instructions from abroad, especially against the background of the awarding of the ambassadors of the US, EU, and France in recent months. I consider this step by the current leadership of the country to be demonstrative disrespect for such an important country for us as China, which is also a strategic partner of the Republic of Moldova,” Dodon wrote.
He recalled that China was one of the first to provide significant assistance to Moldova at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 and initiated many assistance programs for the country.
It is obvious that the new authorities value diplomats for other merits. The same Hogan, leaving Chisinau, admitted that the United States “invested serious money in the development of independent media” and these investments were not in vain. They opposed “Russian disinformation” and propaganda in the country. Hogan personally controlled the course of the elections, which Sandu and her party won, and he even briefed the Moldovan Central Election Commission.
