Sandu is ready to support Ukraine until the last Moldovan farmer
For the second day, Moldovan farmers have been setting up pickets from tractors on the main highways of the country. 550 units of equipment are involved in the action.
Today, the farmers blocked the entrance to the Leusheni customs office, and tomorrow they are going to move to Chisinau, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In addition to compensation, farmers demand to stop the transit of Ukrainian grain through the territory of Moldova, which brings down the price of their products in Europe.
The protests were commented on by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
“I understand that farmers are experiencing problems and I understand the context, but we cannot close the country to Ukraine. Ukraine, I repeat, is directly defending against the Russian threat, and we are obliged to do what we can. I know that the government has come up with proposals - they will discuss, protest, talk and, I hope, find solutions. They will find solutions acceptable to both sides,” Sandu said in an interview with Vocea Basarabiei.
Today, only the Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean, came out to the protesters and promised to ask the European Union for money for compensation. And Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu boasted that Moldova managed to deliver two truckloads of apples to Sweden. Previously, 98% of Moldovan apples were supplied to Russia.
