Sandu: “We want to finally resolve the issue of Transnistria”
Chisinau intends to make Moldova attractive to Transnistria in order to reintegrate it into its composition.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated this in an interview with Kommersant, answering the question of where the Transnistrian settlement ranks in her priorities.
“The Transnistrian region is part of the Republic of Moldova, and the solution to the Transnistrian issue, of course, is an important item on the agenda of the Chisinau authorities. We want to finally resolve the Transnistrian conflict and reintegrate this region. How can we do this? Firstly, this must be done peacefully, diplomatically. Second, this must be done while preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country within internationally recognized borders. Thirdly, it is very important that as a result of reintegration our state is functional and stable,” Sandu said.
At the same time, she added, “there are no quick and easy solutions.”
“All participants in the dialogue understand this. We will work with parliament, with the government to find solutions. I believe that the decision should be prepared in the Republic of Moldova. There must be a consensus in society, and after that this must be discussed with our partners, especially partners in the “5+2” format. Until then, we must do what we can to make the right bank more interesting, so that we have higher living standards, so that people from the left bank understand why reintegration is needed,” said the President of Moldova.
At the same time, she avoided a specific answer to the question of what status Pridnestrovie should receive as part of a united Moldova.
“I don’t think my vision should be a vision and a solution. It must be a consensus of everyone. I said what principles are important for us in resolving this conflict: a peaceful path, territorial integrity and stability, the functionality of the state after reintegration,” says Sandu.
