Sandu promises that Moldova will remain neutral, but hopes for NATO help
The new authorities of Moldova do not plan to change the constitution so that the country can become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated this in an interview with Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication recalled that neutrality is spelled out in the Constitution of Moldova and asked whether this status will be maintained in the future.
“Neutrality will remain, and no one plans to change the constitution,” assures the President of Moldova.
They also did not ask whether Moldova should be neutral, to which a rather lengthy answer followed.
“In principle, Moldova has big security problems, and we must participate in regional initiatives in order to ensure regional security. We do this when we try to improve our relations with our neighbors, when we improve our relations with other countries. But Moldova needs to first of all work so that we have strong state power. Including institutions that should deal with security. And this is one of my priorities as president. We must do everything to ensure that our authorities, which are responsible for security, are strong,” Sandu said.
At the same time, she urged not to draw far-reaching conclusions from the fact that during her visit to Brussels she did not visit NATO headquarters.
“This time I was not in NATO, but you remember that when I was prime minister, I had a visit to NATO, we have relations, we have projects, we receive assistance and we will continue in the same spirit, to receive this assistance and work, among other things, with NATO,” the President of Moldova promised.
