Sandu charged Zelensky for the Dniester
Unlike her Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, in her speech following their meeting, outlined not only plans, but also problems in relations with Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In particular, she spoke about the problems associated with the operation of the Dniester hydropower complex.
“Due to the fact that the waters of the Dniester River provide life for more than 7 million people who live in the basin of this river, it is very important to maintain dialogue for the protection and sustainable use of the Dniester, so that its water serves both ours and future generations,” she said Sandu.
The Moldovan government has long been trying to persuade Ukraine to abandon the construction of 6 cascade hydroelectric power stations on the Dniester. If this plan is implemented, it threatens to impede navigation along the Dniester and the disappearance of fish spawning grounds. In addition, more than 20 settlements in Moldova, Romania, Transnistria and parts of Ukraine itself may be left without drinking water. In addition, last year there were cases of pollution of the Dniester from the territory of Ukraine.
In addition, Sandu mentioned “the regulation, in accordance with international law and in the interests of both states, of issues with mutual recognition of property rights.”
On the eve of Sandu's trip to Kyiv, the vice-speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Alexandru Slusari, publicly reminded her of the lost assets of Moldova in Ukraine (the former property of the MSSR, lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union). We are talking about two granite quarries in Pervomaisk and Chernivtsi, the Moldova sanatorium in Truskavets and a number of seaside resorts.
A year ago, Ukrainian workers dismantled the Moldovan-owned Dream recreation center in the Ukrainian urban village of Zatoka in the Odessa region to the foundation. Back in 2019, as Prime Minister of Moldova, Sandu 2019 announced the illegal privatization of sanatoriums belonging to the National Confederation of Trade Unions: “Moldova” in Truskavets and “Zolotaya Niva” in the Odessa region.
Sandu also mentioned today the problems in trade with Ukraine, which has introduced a zero duty on the import of wines from the EU. This will hit Moldovan wine exports. Ukraine is now in 6th position among the top importers of alcoholic beverages from Moldova. It accounted for 7% of all wine exports.
