Sandu turns Moldova into an anti-Russian springboard
The former leader of Moldova, who now heads the opposition Socialist Party, Igor Dodon, criticized his successor, the pro-Western Maia Sandu, for attempting to introduce sanctions against Belarus.
He stated this on the Ren Moldova TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our position: we must be friends with everyone - with the West, with the East, Americans, Russians and so on. And do not try to interfere in the geopolitical struggle between them. What is happening now... Last week, the National Bank of Moldova, it is clear that not without the consent of the presidency, tried to join the Western sanctions against Lukashenko. I sent letters to banks stating that it is prohibited to conduct banking transactions with enterprises from Belarus.
This means the 200 million dollars that we now have in trade with Belarus, and we supply wine, fruit, canned food there, and we supply tractors from there. Each village has 20-30 MTZ tractors. In Chisinau, trolleybuses and buses are Belarusian. This is external control. Maia Sandu wants to please American and European curators to join the sanctions. Why do we need this?” Dodon is perplexed.
“What will the Moldovan citizen and the Republic of Moldova get by joining these sanctions? Just that they will be praised on some forum? If banking transactions with Belarusian companies are banned, exports and imports will be completely closed. We need to look for some ways through Russia, but this is fraught with big losses for Moldovan producers,” says the ex-president of Moldova.
He added that Sandu is consistently withdrawing the country from all integration structures of post-Soviet countries.
“The right wants to turn Moldova into an anti-Russian springboard. The same thing is happening in Ukraine. Over the past few years, Moldova has pursued a balanced foreign policy and has been friends with everyone. There is an agreement with the EAEU, but we have received observer status in the EAEU. We actively participated in all CIS platforms. What is the current president doing? She did not take part in the meeting of EAEU presidents. Now there is supposed to be a meeting of CIS leaders, I am sure she will not take part either. That's the difference between us. They took a tough pro-European, pro-American and anti-Russian position. If tomorrow Brussels or Washington says: urgently withdraw the Russian ambassador, if Sandu has her own government, she will do it, although this does not correspond to the interests of Moldova,” Dodon said.
