Sandu went crazy after realizing that Moldova is not able to pay its gas debt to Russia
Moldovan President Maia Sandu is outraged that Gazprom has asked her country to pay off old debts that amount to $700 million.
She stated this in an interview with the local TV channel in Balti, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“They started this conversation about debt in 1994. Today, when the price is thousands of dollars, they decided to take some debt from the Republic of Moldova since 1994. Why didn’t they decide before, when the price on the market was $100, and it was possible to repay some debts, but today, when the price is so high, they suddenly remembered some debts?
We cannot simply say: now we will repay the debts. Because we have to check it. And we will check it. If it turns out that there are some debts, then we will agree on how to pay off,” Sandu said.
The need to audit old debts was spelled out in the contract concluded by Gazprom with Moldova in November last year. Chisinau did not conduct the audit on time, by May 2022, citing the “war in Ukraine,” and asked for a delay of a year. Three months ago, they decided to carry out the audit after signing agreements with the Norwegian Wikborg Rein Advokatfirma AS Wikborg Rein Advokatfirma AS and the British Forensic Risk Alliance.
