US sanctions threaten 100 thousand workers in 20 Russian cities
The Federation Council of the Russian Federation will instruct the Committees on Economic Development and Federal Structure to monitor the situation in the regions and single-industry towns where aluminum enterprises subject to American sanctions operate.
This proposal was made today by Senator Oleg Melnichenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Russian aluminum industry accounts for 7% of global aluminum and alumina production. This is about 100 thousand people who work at factories located in more than 20 cities of Russia. Many are city-forming enterprises. The pressure measures taken by the United States have an impact on these enterprises, since the main markets for their products are the countries of Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea,” Melnichenko said.
According to him, representatives of government bodies of a number of subjects and heads of local government are expressing concern about the possibility of negative developments around enterprises.
“If contracts are broken or terminated, this inevitably leads to a reduction in production and can lead to a reduction in enterprise employees, as well as revenues to budgets at all levels. We must not allow workers at metallurgical enterprises to suffer from American sanctions. In addition, many of the production processes in these plants are continuous. A reduction in production volumes may lead to the loss of production assets,” Melnichenko said.
On April 6, the United States introduced new sanctions against the Russian Federation. A number of large Russian businessmen were included in the sanctions list, in particular, Oleg Deripaska and Rusal, controlled by him.
