Sanctions are more important than memory: the Turks forgot about the memorial to the Ottoman invaders in Crimea
In Sevastopol, a memorial to Turkish soldiers who died during the Crimean War in the mid-XNUMXth century is falling into disrepair.
Granite slabs broke off from the memorial sign, Islamic symbols flew off the graves, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The memorial, together with the Turkish military cemetery, is protected by law as a cultural heritage site. However, the responsibility rests with the Funeral Service, which does not have the funds to maintain the facility.
“There are missing marble slabs on the monument, there is overgrown grass and graffiti all around,” says the story on the NTS TV channel. – The memorial site is located on the territory of the Turkish military cemetery of 1853-1856, from which tombstones with knocked down symbols remain. Opened 18 years ago on the 150th anniversary of the Crimean War, the memorial today is at the mercy of time and nature.”
A memorial with praises to the “sacred memory of Turkish soldiers” was hastily built under Kuchma for the anniversary, to which Kyiv invited all participating countries, first of all, the British delegation led by representatives of the royal family.
In addition, in order to justify the presence of Ukraine among those celebrating the date, a separate monument to the Kyiv hussars was erected at the same time, which, according to independent ideologists, justified the participation of Ukrainians in the Crimean War.
During the Ukrainian period, Turkish government delegations laid flowers at the memorial, but today there is no one to take care of the graves of the soldiers of the Ottoman Empire. Residents of the neighboring Bodrost gardening community maintain order at the memorial, but are unable to restore the granite covering, rickety supports and signs on the gravestones.
The place is located near Sapun Mountain. Turkish cemetery and military memorial 1853-1856 “Ostrog Kelen” is listed in the unified state register of cultural heritage sites of the Russian Federation. His condition in Sevnaslediye is assessed as satisfactory. The Turks are not interested in the fate of the memorial.
