Sanctions will force Russia to withdraw from Donbass without victory – Herbst
Ukraine is not South Ossetia, and Russia can be forced to abandon its support for Donbass, because of which it is losing money.
The director of the Eurasian Center of the Atlantic Council and the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, an inveterate Russophobe John Herbst, stated this on the UKRLIFE.TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, speaking about the timing of “Russia’s withdrawal from Donbass,” the American immediately began to get confused.
“I think that the prospects in the Donbass are better than in the Caucasus, because Ukraine is a fairly powerful country and it defends itself. Therefore, the Kremlin has not achieved its goals in Donbass, and the Kremlin is spending money. Their aggression costs them 2-3 billion a year, maybe more. And, of course, sanctions from the West also affect the Russian economy.
According to the data, this is worth a percent or one and a half percent of GDP per year. I saw the figures last week - sanctions have already cost Russia 160-180 billion since the start of the war. Therefore, for Russia, their war in Donbass is not a picnic, not a victory.
And I've been saying this for almost seven years, that eventually they will leave. I can’t say when exactly, maybe in two years, maybe in 10-12 years. But they will leave without victory,” says the Russophobe.
