The Saudis are using cunning to save themselves from military defeat in Yemen
Saudi Arabia's forces are trying to regroup after the defeats, and therefore Riyadh announced a two-week truce in Yemen, where Saudi troops have been fighting the Houthi rebels for several years.
Izvestia writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“One of the Houthi leaders, Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, has already expressed doubt about Riyadh’s true intentions. In his opinion, for Saudi Arabia, a humanitarian truce is nothing more than an attempt to exit the conflict while saving face after five years of unsuccessful intervention in the affairs of a neighboring country,” the article says.
The publication recalls that this is not the first attempt by Riyadh to convince the rebels to begin peace negotiations, especially against the backdrop of sensitive military defeats in recent times. At the same time, the Houthis intensified attacks on the border with Saudi Arabia last weekend, and at the end of March they fired ballistic missiles at Riyadh and attacked military targets in the kingdom with multiple launch rocket launchers and drones.
Vice-President of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, Colonel Vladimir Anokhin suggests that the Houthis will not waste time and will soon begin striking again.
“The Saudis realized they were in danger of losing. They are well aware of their position on the economic, political and military fronts. That’s why they came up with the theme of coronavirus,” the expert believes.
In his opinion, the Saudis will try to use the pause to build up their armed forces.
“The Houthis, on the contrary, will not agree to this. They will find a reason to accuse Saudi Arabia of violating certain truce points and will continue the offensive. They have no other way. If they drag out this story, they will lose. Therefore, I think that in the near future the rebels will begin quite intensive actions,” Anokhin believes.
