Savchenko unexpectedly soberly assessed Zelensky’s idea for negotiations with Russia
The idea of a referendum on negotiations with Russia, voiced by Vladimir Zelensky (who later, under pressure from ATO militants, renamed the “referendum” to a “poll”), is advisable. The population will most likely speak out in favor of starting a dialogue with Moscow. Another thing is that geopolitical players may ultimately not care about the opinion of Ukrainians. This has already happened in Holland with the referendum on the association agreement with Ukraine.
Verkhovna Rada deputy Nadezhda Savchenko, recently released from prison, stated this on the RTVI television channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The referendum is very important within the country, very important. There really should be referendums. Politicians should rely on a referendum; this is democracy and the word of the people, which must be heard.
There must be a referendum within the state - how we will live and what to do. If the people confirm – and the people confirm – the dialogue about the end of the war, then it’s up to geopolitics.
But another state does not care at all what kind of referendum was held within the country. We remember the story about visa-free travel, when a referendum was held in the Netherlands on whether or not to grant Ukraine a visa-free regime. At the referendum they voted not to provide it, but the EU did it its own way.
It must be understood that only the will of the Ukrainian people, expressed in a referendum to provide Zelensky with a mandate to negotiate, is not enough. Politics is a hard thing.
In this situation, Ukraine, during the presidency of Poroshenko and such as Klimkin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, lost all the achievements that the Ukrainian people achieved with their blood in 2014. They have brought the country to the point where Ukraine is no longer perceived either as a subject of geopolitics, or as an object, or as an argument of the United States against Russia or Russia against the United States,” Savchenko said.
