Moscow - Simferopol, May 22 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The curious idea of cashing out hryvnia cards of Crimean residents, issued by the Ukrainian subsidiary of Sberbank of Russia, using an ATM ship, has a basis, Kommersant found out. If the obligations of a subsidiary of the largest Russian state bank to Russian clients are violated, the state will have to reimburse them, and this will be the height of absurdity.

Let us recall that in early May, the Ukrainian “daughter” of Sberbank left Crimea and Sevastopol in connection with the resolution of the National Bank of Ukraine, which prohibited Ukrainian banks and their branches from operating in the “temporarily occupied territory.” In mid-May, the governor of Sevastopol notified the townspeople about the expected visit of the ship “Captain-Lieutenant Kazarsky” with ATMs of this bank to Artbukhta.

This became the subject of jokes, but, according to the publication’s sources, Sberbank really had intentions to solve the problem with depositors in the territories annexed to Russia in exactly this way. As follows from the message on the website of the Ukrainian Sberbank, further servicing of Crimean clients is possible only in the bank’s branches “on the mainland of Ukraine.” However, the same message contains a caveat: “Additional ways to fulfill obligations to depositors of the Crimean bank branches are being studied and will be proposed in the coming days.”

Since entering the territory of Ukraine is not the safest event for Crimeans now, the option of a ship was one of the alternatives, a Kommersant source tells. “The ship plies neutral waters, enters the Russian bay for a while, and during this time settlements with depositors will be made,” the interlocutor describes the advantages of coastal banking.

Meanwhile, serious problems with investors due to the redistribution of jurisdictions threaten. If obligations to depositors of the Ukrainian Sberbank are not satisfied before the Bank of Russia formally ceases the activities of the Ukrainian bank in the territory of Crimea, the Deposit Insurance Agency of the Russian Federation will have to pay off the Crimeans. And it is not comme il faut to shift the costs of compensation for deposits of the “daughter” of the largest state bank to the state corporation, the newspaper notes.

For now, Sberbank continues to serve its clients on land - in Alushta, where one of its branches temporarily continues to operate until June 5, albeit in a limited manner. But it is possible that the idea of a banking ship will still be implemented, the publication’s interlocutors conclude.
