Sberbank will be forced to open branches in Crimea
The Federation Council supported the proposal of State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin to introduce criminal liability for companies that, while operating in Russia, comply with US sanctions.
About it "Izvestia" reported representatives of the Federation Council, who clarified that such measures should apply to banks, mobile operators and large network companies that, for example, do not operate in Crimea.
Thus, the head of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, Andrei Klishas, said that the Federation Council will support the corresponding amendments to the Criminal Code if they are adopted by the State Duma.
“Sanctions from the United States and other countries are aimed at restraining Russia’s development and violating the rights of Russian individuals and legal entities. And if someone on the territory of our country follows these sanctions, there must be responsibility for this,” Klishas said.
This position is shared by his deputy Elena Afanasyeva.
“If Russian companies do not work in the interests of citizens and the Russian state, they must bear responsibility for this, including criminal responsibility,” the senator said. – However, we need to take a closer look at medium and small businesses. He is under incredible pressure because of the sanctions: wages have decreased and, in order to maintain salaries, they have to lay off staff.”
In turn, political scientist Anton Khaschenko drew attention to the fact that today not only foreign, but also some national companies, for fear of falling under Western sanctions, while in Russia, are guided by the legal norms of foreign countries and refuse to work in Crimea.
“A relatively recent example is the recent refusal of one of the Russian banks to work with the defense industry. This is a blow not only to state interests, but also to the rights and interests of millions of Russians. And the whole question now is whether this vicious practice will continue or whether we will try to change the situation radically,” Khashchenko said.
The first reading of the bill on response to US sanctions will take place in the State Duma on May 15. In parallel with this, it is planned to consider amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
