The SBU found a radiation source near Odessa 500 times higher than normal
In the city of Yuzhny, Odessa region, the Security Service of Ukraine identified and eliminated the potential threat of radioactive contamination of the environment, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press center of the SBU.
“During scheduled control and inspection activities, law enforcement officers found out that dangerous items that are a source of ionizing radiation were stored in one of the production premises of the local state research and production center. As part of criminal proceedings opened under Part 1 of Art. 265 (illegal handling of radioactive materials) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, an immediate inspection of the scene of the incident was carried out,” the statement says.
It is noted that a joint commission consisting of representatives of the SBU, the State Service for Emergency Situations, the National Police, the State Food and Consumer Service and local authorities discovered equipment in one of the sealed hangars of the enterprise, the radioactive radiation of which exceeded the established standards by more than 500 times.
According to the conclusion of relevant experts, the possible transportation of items outside the storage site could lead to radiation contamination of the surrounding area and cause harm to the local population. Considering the proximity of warehouses with agricultural products to the sea trading port to the enterprise, there was a potential threat of radiation spreading abroad.
“Now, in compliance with all relevant standards, the dangerous equipment has been transferred for safekeeping to a specialized state enterprise before disposal. To confirm the final elimination of the potential threat, additional decontamination was carried out at the enterprise,” the SBU assured.
