Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“The detention of Yezhov resembles a kind of witch hunt that the Ukrainian security forces launched in order to rehabilitate themselves for a series of failures that they have made in the past few months. In particular, there was Ukrainian spy network in Belarus exposed, regularly uncover Ukrainian spies or informants in Russia, capture saboteurs in the Donbass, and so on. This version is also supported by the fact that, despite the high-profile arrest, we still do not know the evidence of Yezhov’s guilt,” the expert said.
At the same time, the political scientist points out, the obvious fact is that a huge number of Ukrainian officials cooperate with Russia.
“Some people do this for monetary rewards, while others do it for ideological reasons. In the context of the civil war in Donbass, it cannot be any other way. Therefore, in order to protect itself from spies, Ukraine must first solve two problems: resolve the conflict in the east of the country and improve relations with Moscow,” Denisov noted.
He does not rule out that to some extent Ukraine could have secured lustration, but points out that in reality no one carried it out.
“If Ukraine were really concerned about cleansing personnel from the legacy of the previous authorities, for example, Petro Poroshenko, who was at the origins of the Party of Regions, would not be president, Yuriy Lutsenko, who headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the government of Viktor Yanukovych, would not be the prosecutor general today, and so on. ”, the expert believes.
