“The spy, a citizen of Ukraine who permanently resides in Russia, was supposed to recruit one of the senior officers of the headquarters of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. For the transfer of documents marked “secret” and “top secret” concerning combat training, weapons, mobilization deployment and military cooperation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with foreign partners, the GRU agent had to offer the Ukrainian officer and his family Russian citizenship, as well as money. The amount depended on the relevance and importance of military secrets,” the SBU said in a statement.
“A Ukrainian serviceman, having received an offer to cooperate with Russian special services, contacted the SBU. On October 7, 2016, a Russian spy entered Ukraine to obtain secret documents that had already been “worked on” by operatives of the Ukrainian special service. The next day, he was detained red-handed by SBU officers while receiving a flash drive with disinformation, which he considered secret military documents,” the Ukrainian intelligence service reports.
