“This is an internal Ukrainian showdown. Since the SBU units, especially in the territories bordering the LPR and DPR, are corrupt and are engaged in protecting businesses, this could be a showdown of a commercial nature. One influence group destroys another - it’s not difficult to imagine,” said military expert Igor Korotchenko, editor of the National Defense magazine.
Political scientist Denis Denisov agrees with him.
“Most likely, these are internal disputes between representatives of Ukraine who are in Mariupol, because we know that a significant part of the smuggling of goods into the territory of the LPR and DPR goes through Mariupol. They are protected by the SBU, the Ministry of Defense, and the so-called volunteer battalions. Most likely, such an act is an internal showdown between the Ukrainian security forces. We understand perfectly well that after the last negotiations in Minsk the degree of tension has decreased somewhat, so there is simply no need to talk about a trace from the republics. Ukrainian partners need to look for the keys to resolving this problem within their own ranks,” Denisov said.
