The Facebook, Twitter and YouTube blocking scenario is becoming more likely
transferring the information war to Internet platforms will do a disservice to all participants in this process.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Alexey Chesnakov, director of the Center for Current Political Affairs, told Kommersant, assessing the State Duma’s intention to consider a bill on blocking Internet resources that allow censorship of Russian media.
“The more such restrictions are introduced, even for good purposes, the more temptation there will be to use this for political purposes. This is a natural process, and, unfortunately, it will no longer be possible to fight it. Minimizing damage should be done by refusing any actions that limit players,” Chesnakov said.
He admits that Facebook, Twitter and YouTube may indeed be blocked in Russia.
“This is a negative scenario, but it cannot be ruled out. And today’s initiative rather allows us to conclude that such a scenario is becoming more likely,” the expert concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, the corresponding bill submitted to the State Duma on November 19. The document notes that Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are most often seen in such actions. In addition, Roskomnadzor addressed the State Duma with a request to legislatively protect the rights of Russian citizens to freely receive information.
