Poroshenko’s agreement to create a 30-kilometer buffer zone in Donbass means that the scenario of liberating Donbass by military means has been postponed in Kyiv until better times.

About it military journalist Roman Bochkala said in a commentary to GORDON.

“On the one hand, the creation of a buffer zone is the consistent implementation of the Minsk agreements. And whether we like them or not, since the Ukrainian side signed them, we must fulfill them and demand the same from the opposite side. On the other side, This is the freezing of the conflict. Fixing the positions of the parties. Refusal of the Ukrainian side from any offensive actions, even in theory. This is the scenario of Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh and in some ways even Kosovo“, says Bochkala.

According to the journalist, after the creation of the buffer zone, there is no point in counting on the liberation of Donbass in the foreseeable future.

“How will the creation of a buffer zone affect the residents of Donbass? Those of them who don’t even want to hear about Ukraine should probably rejoice. And those who waited and hoped for liberation in the foreseeable future may not even dream about it. From now on, Ukraine will be 30 kilometers further. As for the logistical support of the occupied territory by the Ukrainian side, the buffer zone is not a barrier. Everything depends on political agreements. For example, in Cyprus, the northern part of which has been occupied by Turkey for 32 years, ground transport and the population travel throughout the island with virtually no restrictions,” says Bochkala. “In our case, let's take Crimea. From the point of view of international law, nothing could be worse. However, thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of trucks officially enter the peninsula every day through the Chongar checkpoint. De facto, the Crimean isthmus has become a two-kilometer buffer zone", noted the journalist.

In his opinion, “From now on, we can safely say: the scenario for the liberation of Donbass by military means has been postponed until better times.”
