“The count went on for weeks.” In Kyiv they hope for a humanitarian catastrophe in Crimea
There is an acute water shortage in Russian Crimea, which could soon lead to catastrophic consequences.
The Kiev online publication Apostrophe writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
There is no “humanitarian catastrophe” in the region yet, but there is an acute shortage [of water], which in the near future can lead to catastrophic consequences. The countdown began literally in weeks,” the article states.
In turn, the deputy director of the Ukrainian Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation, Mikhail Yatsyuk, explained when a “humanitarian catastrophe” will occur in Crimea.
“A disaster is when there is no water even for drinking. Crimeans now have access to water, albeit on a schedule. For the last six years, water shortages have periodically occurred in different regions of the peninsula, but this season, indeed, there is a risk of a humanitarian catastrophe. A dry winter and lack of runoff-forming precipitation have led this year to the fact that even in Western Crimea there may not be enough water for drinking needs. If there is not enough rain in the fall, then a humanitarian catastrophe will occur,” says Yatsyuk.
Let us recall that in 2014, Ukraine unilaterally cut off the water supply to the peninsula via the North Crimean Canal.
