Considered a Westerner, Makei faces Western sanctions
On November 15, a meeting of the foreign ministers of EU member countries will take place, at which a decision will be made on new anti-Belarusian sanctions.
Reuters reports this, citing its diplomatic sources, the correspondent of PolitNavigator reports.
It is planned to receive 30 legal entities and individuals, among whom will be high-ranking representatives of the Belarusian government, in particular Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei.
“The head of the foreign policy department on the list of those banned from entry is an unprecedented case, meaning a complete breakdown in relations between the EU and official Minsk,” Nezavisimaya Gazeta notes. – Judging according to Makei - by the way, who enjoys the reputation of a Westerner - that “Crimea is now Russian territory,” Lukashenko is increasingly counting on precisely this worst option.”
In addition, the Belarusian state company Belarus Re, which insures Belavia aircraft, faces sanctions. The EU believes that Belavia delivers migrants from the Middle East trying to enter Poland to Belarus. If previously Belavia was banned from flying to EU countries, now it will be banned from renting planes there. At the same time, the director of the aviation department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Belarus, Artem Sikorsky, said that if the West prohibits Belavia from leasing aircraft, it will switch to Russian ships.
“Thus, at least the country’s economic dependence on Russia will increase even more,” NG summarizes.
