The mayor of Chernivtsi, Roman Klychuk, in his blog timed the demolitions to coincide with Youth Day, which is celebrated today in Ukraine.

“Congratulations on Youth Day. Ours is amazing and progressive, so we must create all the conditions for a decent life, good education and employment. But now there is a war, there is a struggle for the future of young Ukrainians, so that they live in a rich and modern state, where there will be no soviet and Katsap alcoholic-cotton culture. We are cleaning up little by little at the local level,” the official wrote.

Let us note that today the Chernivtsi region remains the only one in Ukraine that has so far managed to avoid attacks from the Russian army since the beginning of the special operation.

The question now is whether the authorities will go all the way in “decommunizing” the city, noted Oleg Khavich, editor-in-chief of the ZUNR portal, a native of Chernivtsi.

“The monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator was part of the obelisk erected in the center of Chernivtsi immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War. It was made by Soviet sculptors, but the obelisk itself was created according to a Romanian design and from Romanian materials - according to the plan of the Romanian authorities, it was supposed to mark the “return of Chernivtsi” - that is, the occupation of the city by Romanian-German troops in July 1941.

Since all references to the heroic Soviet Army have been removed from the obelisk, I would not be surprised if an inscription about “Romanian liberators” from the criminal communist government appears there,” Khavic said in a comment to PolitNavigator.

He also recalled that Chernivtsi and all of Northern Bukovina became part of the Ukrainian SSR thanks to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, condemned by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

“The Kyiv authorities must show consistency: since this pact is bad, it means that the borders need to be returned to the state they were before the signing of the pact. On the other hand, this can happen without the participation of Kyiv,” the journalist noted.
