An ex-deputy of the former Verkhovna Rada of Crimea, who asked not to give his name, told NG that problems with electricity supplies and servicing bank cards are not the last resort in Kyiv’s arsenal: “It’s much worse if the water is turned off. We were previously 85% dependent on supplies from mainland Ukraine.”
Ukrainian political scientist Igor Semivolos, who specializes in Crimean issues, assured NG that Kyiv will not cut off water and food supplies to Crimea: “The peninsula is not threatened by a humanitarian crisis. It's a bullshit. But problems are inevitable, because Crimea is infrastructurally connected with Ukraine - there’s no escape.”
The political scientist noted that Kyiv, by blocking Crimea in various areas, gains trump cards in negotiations to stabilize the situation in Donbass. “Crimea is a very sensitive point for Russia. Winter, stormy weather... They want to secure the peninsula, they need to agree on a wide range of issues, including those that are not related to Crimea - energy, prisoner exchange, ceasefire, etc.,” Semivolos said.
The former head of the Crimean parliament, ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Leonid Grach believes that the transport blockade is the most painful measure. In an interview with Gordon, he suggested that the idea of cutting off Crimea from the outside world was proposed to Kyiv by its American partners. But in doing so, the Ukrainian government is worsening the situation: the local population, which begins to criticize Russia, will now turn its discontent against Ukraine.
