The premiere of the historical drama “Rzhev” took place back in December 2019. However, today journalists are actively discussing the film in connection with a complaint from film critic Anton Dolin about a review in the Evening Courier publication. The journalist claims that the media resource signed someone else’s article with his name in which the film was mentioned.
The editor-in-chief of “Evening Courier” Dmitry Kagaev explained that “Anton Dolin” is the pseudonym of one of the authors. He called the situation "a mere coincidence."
The resulting excitement forced journalists to turn to Rzhev director Igor Kopylov for comment.
«It’s nice that today they remember a painting that is very close to me. And the reason, the reason can be any. The main thing is that we don’t forget what this film is about and how it really happened. During the filming of Rzhev, we tried to convey as accurately as possible the events and atmosphere described in Vyacheslav Kondratiev’s story “Redeemer with Blood.” They even decided not to invent the names and surnames of the characters, but to use real ones, which the front-line writer mentioned in his book. For example, in the story the company commander bore the surname Prigozhin, and in the film the company commander also received it"- said the director.
At the same time, in the final version of the film the name of the main character does not appear. This is due to the request of entrepreneur Yevgeny Prigozhin, who played a significant role in the creation of the film. Kopylov explained that the film crew satisfied the businessman’s wishes in order to avoid distortion of facts by unscrupulous media.

As the director noted, “Rzhev” is a film adaptation of the book by front-line soldier Vyacheslav Kondratiev “Redeeem with Blood.” The story tells of the Battle of Rzhev in 1942-1943, which took place three hundred kilometers from Moscow. Descendants of Red Army soldiers were involved in the work on the painting. The main characters were played by Sergei Zharkov, Ivan Batarev, Oleg Gayanov, Alexander Aravushkin, Alexander Bukharov and Alexander Gorbatov. Sometimes they had to film in thirty-degree frost.
